Turkish coffee machines

We have already seen how Turkish coffee is made, a way of preparation and a coffee so peculiar that it even needs a rather special coffee maker to obtain the right result. And when we Westerners discovered these brews, we were taken by surprise.

Turkish coffee has nothing to do with what we know here, nor is it the same how to drink it or even how Turkish coffee machines work. We have to change our mindset and understand that we are dealing with a completely different brew from what we are used to.

But here, we have come to talk only about the Turkish coffee maker, and that is what we will do. To begin with, let’s start with its definition:

🇹🇷 What is a Turkish coffee machine?

The Turkish coffee machine, technically called cezve or ibrik (depending on the region), has nothing to do with the machines that in other countries we understand as “coffee machines”. It is, rather, a vessel specially adapted to brewing Turkish coffee. It can be made of ceramic or metal (usually brass or copper) and has a characteristic, very elongated handle, which is used to manipulate the Turkish coffee pot from a distance without burning our hands.

The handle is often made of wood or covered with a material that insulates the temperature.

The pour spout is also important because once the brewing process is finished, the coffee is poured directly into the cup (and should never be stirred).

Here is a Turkish coffee machine, in case you have any doubts:

Turkish copper coffee machines are the most traditional model and also the most commonly used in the home. This material is chosen for the same reason that it is also used in the water boilers of high-end espresso machines: it ensures a stable temperature treatment. It is also much more resistant to corrosion due to continuous contact with water.

In the more “modern” models, Turkish coffee machines are usually made of enamelled or vitrified steel and have the disadvantage that they cannot be used on induction hobs. If you have one of these hobs at home, then you will have to opt for one of the few Turkish coffee machines for induction that have been available on the market for a short time.

The traditional Turkish coffee machine is always operated directly over the stove, like an Italian mocha coffee machine. However, in recent times, some models of electric Turkish coffee machines have appeared on the market (evolution is everywhere).

Although Turkish coffee machines and Turkish coffee are concepts specific to Turkey, this type of coffee machine – or others that respond to a similar concept – are also used in other areas of Eastern Europe, such as Greece, Ukraine, Russia and the Balkans.

🇹🇷 Buying a Turkish coffee machine – Prices

Although it is a purely typical utensil of Turkey and its surrounding regions, today we can buy a Turkish coffee maker from anywhere in the world, thanks mainly to Amazon, which currently has a wide range of cezves such as all these that we show you below.

Their prices are up to date and reflect today’s current rates:

🇹🇷 Turkish coffee machine: how to use it?

If you want to know how to use a Turkish coffee machine, here is a video where it is explained in detail. Actually, using a Turkish coffee machine is quite simple, as it is a completely manual coffee machine that requires very little maintenance or complex operations.

What is more complicated is knowing how to correctly execute all the steps so that the result is a real Turkish coffee and not an unbearable brew. This technique is explained in detail in our guide to Turkish coffee making.

🇹🇷 Electric Turkish coffee machines

Electric Turkish coffee machines work in a similar way to Italian electric coffee makers: they have a base that plugs into the mains, so you don’t have to put it on the stove to heat it up.

They are much safer and more practical, although, of course, they do not have the charm of preparing Turkish coffee in a 100% traditional style.

Their appearance is the same as that of an authentic Turkish cezve (they still have that characteristic shape with the elongated and curved handle). Still, the materials are much more modern and adapted to a place where there will necessarily have to be electric current. If you are looking to buy a Turkish electric coffee maker, here are some examples of what you can find on Amazon today:

🇹🇷 Where to buy a Turkish coffee machine?

Unless you bring them back as souvenirs from a trip to Ottoman lands, the easiest way to buy coffee machines for Turkish coffee is through Amazon. There you have access to a variety of brands and models, whereas, in a physical shop, this is a rather difficult item to obtain.

🇹🇷 What size is a Turkish coffee maker?

The most common size for a Turkish coffee maker is half a litre (500 ml), although it is easy to find smaller models as well. If you want to buy a large Turkish coffee machine with a larger capacity than half a litre, then you will have more problems. There are some, such as the Ilsa Omnia, but they are not the most common.

You can also buy complete sets for making coffee in the sand, which, apart from the Turkish coffee makers or cezves themselves, include the sand tank for heating it.

🇹🇷 The best brands of Turkish coffee machines

Authentic Turkish coffee machines (the ones you can buy in any local shop in Turkey) are not branded or manufactured by any multinational. At least not visibly.

But as they are not so easy to find in other countries, we have to resort to one of the most common manufacturers, especially those specialised in the Italian coffee machine sector, which includes in their catalogue some model of cezve, ibrik, or Turkish coffee machine.

This is the case, for example, of brands such as Ilsa or Ibili. You can buy a cezve, or at least a very similar container, from any of these brands, or use a saucepan to prepare Turkish coffee if you don’t have anything better to hand. It is not the same as a real Turkish coffee pot, but the most important thing will always be the brewing method and not so much the content of the beverage.

🇹🇷 Best-selling Turkish coffee machines

Turkish coffee machines are a growing trend, and good proof of this is the number of models that appear in the ranking of the best-selling Turkish coffee machines so far this year. Take a look at them:
