Lavazza coffee machine button lights and their modes

Lavazza coffee machines are very robust and durable machines that rarely give us problems. However, sometimes there will be small inconveniences that we will discover because the machine will warn us through the lights on its buttons. When there is no display on a coffee machine, it will indicate its modes thanks to codes in the form of flashing lights.

In this guide, we will show you how to identify each of the modes of your Lavazza coffee machine by looking at the light codes on its brewing buttons. As Lavazza has many models, not everything we say here will apply to every model. Remember to download the manual for the Lavazza model you use for further support.

Some modes will inform us that the machine is ready to brew coffee, others that there is no water in the tank or even a fault.

Why is the light on my Lavazza coffee machine flashing?

We are now going to indicate each of the possibilities that you may encounter when using a Lavazza coffee machine so that when you see the lights flashing, you don’t panic and you know what to do at all times:

No light comes on

Sometimes, after using the coffee machine, the power button suddenly goes off (on models with two buttons, only one goes off), which means the machine is blocked. To solve this problem, unplug the coffee machine and plug it in again after a few minutes; if the problem is not solved, there is a fault.

If you have plugged the machine back in and after pressing the on/brew button, no light comes on, and the control board is not receiving power. To find out where the problem is, you will have to disassemble the coffee maker and go through the power supply circuit to the control board to find the fault.

This article explains how to detect this fault in a similar coffee machine: My Dolce Gusto coffee machine does not turn on. Follow the same procedure to troubleshoot your Lavazza coffee machine.

The power (coffee brewing) light flashes white

On single-button models such as the Tiny or Jolie, the brew button will flash white when the thermoblock is heating up and during coffee brewing. This flashing will be a slow flashing lasting only about 20 seconds for heating and a maximum of 90 seconds during brewing.

On two-button models such as the Jolie Plus, Voicy or SMEG, the two brewing buttons will flash slowly to indicate that the thermoblock is heating up. During coffee brewing, only the pressed button will flash while the other button remains off.

*Two-button models: If one of the buttons is flashing white and the other is on steady, you are out of the water (the machine will make five attempts to brew coffee before stopping).

The power (brew) light flashes white (very fast)

When the light flashes at a very fast rate, it is not heating or brewing coffee; it means that:

  • On single-button models, the water tank is empty or incorrectly positioned.
  • On two-button models, the capsule tray is full (after 5 or 6 coffees, depending on the model).

Power light (coffee brewing) steady white

The machine is ready to brew coffee when the power light is steady white. The thermoblock is hot, and no errors or malfunctions are present.

The power light (coffee brewing) flashes red

The Lavazza coffee machine will not brew coffee when the light flashes red. This light code means that there is a malfunction or a fault. It will also light up if the machine’s temperature is below four °C, above 40°C or the humidity is above 95%.

Disconnect the machine from the mains and try plugging it in after a few minutes, and if the problem persists, there will be a fault: Troubleshooting Lavazza.

Espresso light flashing orange and lungo light off

The coffee machine has a fault and will not allow us to prepare coffees. This colour code will occur on two-button models with a descaling warning. See the link above for possible faults with your Lavazza coffee machine.

The espresso light flashes white, and the lungo light flashes orange

In this case, the Lavazza coffee machine is ready for descaling. To proceed with the descaling process, press both buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds. This process is not reversible.

Note: Not all Lavazza models have the orange light warning us of the need for descaling; it is up to the user to decide when to perform it.

Preheating for descaling is in progress.

The espresso light is steady orange

When the heating process is completed, the light of the orange espresso button will come on for descaling. Only pressing this button starts the process.

Once the descaling process has been completed, if you press the espresso button again, it starts flashing, and the rinsing process begins.
