Philips Series 2000

Name: Series 2000
Brand: Philips
Type: Espresso
Operation: Automatic
Capacity: 1 litre

We cannot include it in our Saeco automatic coffee machine series, but this Philips 2000 Series is a worthy direct heir to the successful – and long-lasting – Saeco Xsmall. As with previous Saeco models and the Philips 3000 Series and Philips 4000 Series automatic coffee makers, the manufacturer, Philips, has taken a very popular but now outdated and worn-out model to rejuvenate and wash its face.

The result is the Philips 2000 Series, a model that falls short of the 3000 series and 4000 Series and is a great entry point for users who want to get started in the world of automatic espresso machines. We could talk about a basic automatic espresso machine. By the way, it corresponds to the HD8651 model within the Philips reference nomenclature.

The Xsmall’s heritage is most evident in its unmistakable exterior design. The body has very modern, rounded shapes, and the coffee machine as a single piece is very compact. As you can see in the following picture, many of the components can be opened or separated from the coffee machine (for convenience or to clean them separately).

The control panel of the Philips 2000 Series is greatly simplified, partly because it is an automatic coffee machine with considerably fewer options than its range mates. The main features are two large buttons, the On/Off switch and the main coffee-making button (located in the centre and with two push options: long coffee and espresso).

Around it is four other smaller buttons that activate the main options and functions of the coffee maker: steamer, grinder, two cups of espresso, hot water, maintenance… We will talk about them later in this analysis.

Philips 2000 Series: Successor of the Xsmall

Like any self-respecting automatic coffee machine, the Philips 2000 Series has a built-in grinder that allows you to enjoy the unrivalled taste of freshly ground espresso.

The grinder has ceramic wheels and offers up to 5 pre-defined grinding thicknesses (finer or coarser grinding) and a transparent lid on top to preserve the aromas of the raw material. It can store up to 180 grams of coffee beans.

There is also the steamer tube, a plastic Panarello that allows us to enjoy freshly made milk foam for making cappuccinos or lattes in the traditional way.

In addition, the Philips 2000 Series offers a programmable memory function, thanks to which we can set the amount of coffee in each cup to our liking. Do you like it longer or shorter? No problem, with the Philips 2000 Series, you can customise it as often as you like. And if you want to enjoy a brew, you can pour hot water directly into your cup and avoid the hassle of having to boil it elsewhere.

Our Philips 2000 Series has a 1-litre water tank capacity, a smaller tank than other higher range (but also more expensive) automatic coffee machines. Still, it has the advantage of keeping the size of the Xsmall within very acceptable limits. We already know that automatic coffee machines always have the disadvantage of being heavy and bulky compared to other segments of home coffee machines.

We also have to talk about the cleaning and maintenance of the coffee machine, a task that is all the more important when our machine is more complex. In the case of the Philips 2000 Series, the coffee unit can be removed and therefore easily cleaned or rinsed separately under the water tap. In addition, the coffee machine is programmed to rinse automatically every time the device is switched on or off.

This eliminates any possibility of coffee residue in the internal pipes. We also have a complete warning system that tells us when the coffee machine needs to be decalcified and also guides you through the decalcification process.

Do you like it? Without a doubt, this Philips 2000 Series automatic is an appealing option for users who want to enjoy a good espresso at home with the convenience of pressing a button and having it served in the cup in just a few seconds. Below we will list all the functions and technical specifications of this model, so you can get a better idea of what you will find if you decide to take it home:

Saeco Philips Series 2100

As with the top model Series 3000 (with its advanced Series 3100), Saeco decided to release successive upgraded versions of its Philips Series 2000 coffee machine. The first of these is called the Philips 2100 Series and is available in two colours: black and silver.

It can also be found under the Philips HD8652/59 nomenclature. The main difference with the 2000 Series is the possibility of attaching a milk tank to it and making automatic cappuccinos or lattes, taking the milk and emulsifying it directly from this tank. Besides, logically, its price is higher.

Everything else (size, capacities, grinder) is exactly the same as in the 2000 Series version.

If you only drink espressos or americanos, it doesn’t make up for the price difference. Still, if you want to make cappuccinos or milk froth drinks, it’s much more convenient and economical to buy the Philips 2100 Series than to use a separate milk frother and emulsify the milk yourself.

Here are the prices so you can compare them with 2000:

Saeco Philips Series 2200

Behind the Philips 2100 came the Philips 2200, also called the Philips EP2200, which was launched in 2019.

It has a milk frothing device (Panarello), 100% ceramic grinders with the possibility of grinding up to 12 degrees or thickness, and is compatible with Aquaclean water filters. And perhaps the most interesting feature is the two coffee bean tanks for grinding. An automatic coffee maker with two coffee tanks allows you to choose the variety you want to grind for each brew.

On top of all this, the Philips 2200 Series stands out for its interactive digital display, which serves both to inform us of the status of the machine at any given time and to interact with it and sort out the actions we want to take.

In short, a lot of extras makes us rethink the concept of this series 2200 as “basic range” within Philips, and that brings it very clearly to the benefits of the Philips 3100, which in theory is the superior model.

As with the 2100 Series mentioned above, we can attach a milk tank (LatteGo system, Philips calls it) to this Philips EP2200 and prepare lattes and cappuccinos in less than a crow. Naturally, this last option is a little more expensive than the previous ones.

NOTE: The Philips EP2221, a much-improved version of the Philips Series 2200, will be released in 2019.

Benefits of the Philips 2000 Series

  • The automatic rinsing cycles.
  • The ceramic grinders are much more durable than metal grinders and avoid the risk of overheating transmitting foreign aromas to the coffee beans.
  • The price is very tight, it is not easy to find a good automatic coffee maker under £300.
  • The size. It is considerably more compact than a conventional automatic coffee machine. This is an advantage mainly due to the smaller capacity of the water tank.
  • Ease of use: the main containers (the water tank and the waste tank) can be removed from the front, by pulling them out towards us. Much more convenient than having to remove them from the back of the coffee machine.
  • The stainless steel boiler.

Disadvantages of the Philips 2000 Series

  • The secondary buttons (located around the large central button) are in our opinion too small and somewhat uncomfortable to operate.
  • The capacity of the water tank – 1 litre – is considerably smaller than the other two higher-ranking Philips coffee machines.
  • The coffee maker behaves truly automatically – that is, you press a button and get the desired drink – only when you prepare americano. If we want to add milk, or milk foam, we already have to put the ingredients together ourselves and serve everything in the right order in our cup.

Philips 2000 Series: Videos

To complete our analysis, there is nothing better than a video review by another team of experts, such as the friends of MaxiCoffee:

Or perhaps you prefer to see the real testimony of a less professional private user? Well, here it is:

Why buy a Philips 2000 Series?

The Philips 2000 Series is an automatic coffee machine with basic functions (basic within the sophistication inherent in any automatic coffee machine), with a capacity of one litre, 15 bars of pressure and a price that is quite adjusted for what this segment of coffee machines is: under 300 £.

We recommend it if you value the convenience of being able to prepare freshly ground espressos at the touch of a button. However, bear in mind that it does not have a milk container and that if you want to froth milk, you will have to add it manually to your drink. Only prepare espressos and americanos.

There are some similar options in the market, both in performance and price. You can take a look at the Delonghi ECAM 22.110 or the Saeco Minuto. If you are looking for a more powerful automatic, or one that makes cappuccinos and lattes automatically, then you will have to go to the top models from Philips, such as the 3000 Series and 4000 Series. Or get the latest Philips 2100 Series upgrade.
