Yes, my friends, the Internet of Things has also reached the world of coffee machines, and proof of this is the Nespresso Prodigio, one of the most recent models from the Nespresso company. We’ll get to know it in depth in this analysis, but first of all, we’ll tell you that this is the first home coffee machine that can be completely controlled with a mobile phone.

Nespresso Prodigio is a capsule coffee machine from the Nespresso system, with 19 bar pressure, 0.8-litre capacity and three programmable selection buttons (for ristretto, for espresso and for lungo).

It is fully modular, which means that its elements can be attached to or removed from the main body independently. It is manufactured by both Krups and Delonghi and is available in two versions: the standard Prodigio and the Nespresso Prodigio Milk, which we will discuss later.

The truth is that in terms of design and appearance, this Nespresso Prodigio does not add much to the current capsule coffee machine scenario. We can’t call it innovative or particularly eye-catching.

It is mainly launched in a dark grey shade (Titan) and a silver-grey version (Silver) – it is to be expected that Nespresso will expand the colour range of its Prodigio over time – and the dimensions of the piece are not particularly striking. It is quite similar to the ideas conveyed by the Pixie or the Inissia, to cite two popular examples.

Some features of the Nespresso Prodigio coffee maker

On Nespresso coffee machines, and in general, on most capsule machines on the market, it is normal to find two operating buttons: one for espressos or short coffee and one for longer, larger coffee.

The Nespresso Prodigio also has a pre-programmed button for a third size: the ristretto, which is even shorter and more concentrated than the traditional espresso. The water tank, by the way, can be placed in different locations on the back of the coffee maker.

We also like the intelligent system of extracting used capsules, thanks to which we only have to worry about putting the capsule in place and starting the coffee machine. At the end of the extraction process, the Prodigio coffee machine takes care of ejecting the used capsule by itself.

Nespresso Prodigio: Controlled by mobile phone

Yes, the greatest novelty of this Nespresso Prodigio, and what you will see in all the brand’s promotional spaces, is the possibility of controlling the coffee machine with your mobile phone. Using a smartphone and downloading the Nespresso app, you can activate the preparation of any coffee or programme the extraction to have the coffee ready at the time that suits you best.

For the latter, as is normal, you need to make sure you have left the desired capsule correctly positioned in the dispenser and the cup or glass underneath it (if you do not want to put the kitchen lost coffee).

The Nespresso Prodigio has a Bluetooth connection to receive the signals from your smartphone but can also use wifi for long-range connections.

Other operations that can be carried out with the Nespresso Prodigio app (available for iOS and Android) are consulting the status of the coffee machine (number of capsules remaining, tank filling level) or selecting the size of the extraction.

You can see an aspect of the main menu of the Nespresso Prodigio app in the image below:

Nespresso Prodigio Milk: With Aeroccino 3

As with other coffee machines in the range, the Prodigio coffee maker is also available in a superior version, called the Nespresso Prodigio Milk. The Nespresso Prodigio Milk is exactly the same as the basic Prodigio but also includes an Aeroccino milk whisk already attached to the coffee machine.

In any case, the Aeroccino can be separated and used independently without any problem.

The difference in the price of the Nespresso Prodigio Milk compared to the Nespresso Prodigio is less than what the Aeroccino 3 costs separately, so we consider it a good buy if you are really going to use the milk frother.

Nespresso Prodigio coffee maker: Main features

  • Modular capsule coffee maker with 19 bar pressure
  • Thermoblock heating system: your coffee machine is ready in just 25 seconds from the moment you switch it on.
  • You can choose from three predefined sizes: very short (ristretto), short (espresso) and long (lungo).
  • It can be controlled from a mobile phone, thanks to the Nespresso app.
  • Bluetooth and Wifi connection.
  • Includes 16 free coffee capsules.
  • Automatic decalcification warnings.
  • Rotating and removable water tank, 0.8 litre capacity
  • Intelligent system for ejecting used capsules.
  • Size: 12 x 38 x 35 cms.
  • Weight: just over 3 kg.
  • Power consumption: 1260 watts.

Advantages of the Nespresso Prodigio

  • Logically, the possibility of controlling it with the mobile phone, and especially the possibility of programming the extraction at the time you prefer.
  • The selection buttons for three coffee sizes. Many Nespresso coffee machines have only two buttons: long and short coffee.
  • The 19 bar pressure.
  • Includes 16 assorted coffee capsules, free of charge.
  • The Nespresso Prodigio Milk version is a good way to get an Aeroccino for less than its normal price.

Disadvantages of the Nespresso Prodigio

  • The water tank, only 0.8 litres capacity.
  • It does not detect when the tank is empty.
  • The limited variety of colours it offers, at least initially.
  • It is quite expensive if we are not going to take full advantage of the possibility of controlling it with the mobile phone.

And finally, the star feature of this coffee machine: how to operate the Nespresso Prodigio with the app:

Why buy a Nespresso Prodigio?

Nespresso launched this new Nespresso Prodigio coffee machine, but the truth is that it is a fairly new model on the market. The possibility of being able to control all its basic functions with a mobile phone through an app is something never seen before in the world of coffee machines. In a way, it is to be expected that this is only the first step of much more advanced development.

Is it worth buying this new coffee machine just for the Bluetooth connection and operation from the mobile phone? Well, in our opinion, the usefulness is questionable, especially if we compare the price of this machine with other Nespresso coffee machines or even with the top-of-the-range models of rival brands.

After all, the user still has to intervene at the basic moments, and most of the uses we make of a home coffee machine take place when we are inside the house.

This is a very good idea, but we believe that Nespresso should go further – and lower the price – so that this concept has a real path and does not remain a mere anecdote.

If you really think you’re going to take advantage of the coffee schedule, then this is an excellent buy. Especially the option of the Nespresso Prodigio Milk, which means considerable savings on the purchase of the Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother.
