Three coffee makers in one. It was the slogan chosen by Nestlé to present the Dolce Gusto Colors: the Dolce Gusto coffee maker for the past 2017, more than 3 years ago.

It is a curious model that accompanied the Lumio as a novelty by Dolce Gusto for the 2017 Christmas campaign. Its most excellent quality is the possibility of customising it with various panels in different colours, which is already included in the box. It means that for the price of one, it is as if you were buying three coffee machines in different colours.

Is this enough of a novelty? Does this panel customisation add anything to the already well-trodden market of capsule coffee makers on the Internet? We don’t think so – besides; it’s not a 100% original idea because Nespresso applied it years ago with its Nespresso Pixie Clips model.

However, if it’s the first Dolce Gusto coffee maker you buy or you want to give someone a beautiful gift, then this Dolce Gusto Colors does become an attractive option. At least its price hasn’t gone through the roof compared to its more direct rivals. Let’s get to know it better:

The Dolce Gusto Colors is a 1-litre automatic coffee machine. By “automatic”, we mean that it has the Play&Select system integrated. This little wheel allows us to choose the amount of water we want to use in each preparation, and therefore determine the size and intensity of our coffee. We have an extra option called XL, which is an extra long coffee with a higher quantity of water than usual (we also find it in the Dolce Gusto Lumio, but not in previous coffee machines).

Functionally, its features end here. When you buy the Dolce Gusto Colors coffee maker online, you can do the same as the Lumio or any of the Dolce Gusto coffee makers above, except the extra-long XL coffee maker mentioned above. It means that it is not a model worthy of being described as “new”, but at the same time keeps it in a range of practical, intuitive and straightforward machines, which the target public of the Dolce Gusto brand likes very much.

Dolce Gusto Colors: Various Colours

Let’s now talk about the leading quality or distinctive feature of this new Dolce Gusto machine: the possibility of changing its colour. This effect is achieved with interchangeable colour panels, which can be easily removed and replaced.

The packaging comes by default with three different colour panels (we don’t know if we will be able to get more in the future, although as a marketing operation, it wouldn’t be out of place). However, when changing them, we realise that the colour of the coffee maker is hardly distinguishable if we look at it from the front.

The design of the Dolce Gusto Colors, by the way, is enormously similar to that of the Lumio (but without the central hole). Judge for yourself:

Dolce Gusto Colors: Main characteristics

  • Dolce Gusto capsule coffee maker, with 15 bar pressure pump.
  • One litre water tank, transparent and removable.
  • Includes three different coloured panels, which can be easily exchanged.
  • Removable and height-adjustable non-drip tray.
  • Integrated Play&Select system to choose the volume of each cup or preparation.
  • XL function: allows you to make extra-long coffees.
  • Automatic decalcification alarm: the button lights up in orange, so you know when you need to decalcify your Dolce Gusto coffee machine.
  • The coffee maker switches off automatically to save energy when not in use.
  • Power: 1500 watts.
  • Dimensions: 37 x 18 x 21 cms.
  • Weight: just over 3 kg.

Advantages of the Dolce Gusto Colors

  • The possibility of easily interchanging the coffee maker’s colour panels, completely changing its appearance.
  • It has a petite and compact size.
  • The new XL function for very very long coffees.

Disadvantages of the Dolce Gusto Colors

  • Apart from being able to change the colours, which there will be users who are not very interested, we do not find great novelties or incentives to choose this model over others from the same brand or even from the competition.
  • The system of changing the panels is simple, but in the long run in the hustle and bustle of everyday life and with the hustle and bustle of the kitchens we are not going to pay much attention to it. In the long term, it is logical to leave the colour you like best on, and keep the rest of the panels in a drawer.

Dolce Gusto Colors: How it works

Why buy a Dolce Gusto Colors?

It is a question that we ask ourselves every year when we see that Dolce Gusto brings out two new models every Christmas. Is there any justification for such a launch? Do the latest coffee machines bring enough to the market to displace the old ones? Is it worth buying the Dolce Gusto Colors on Amazon, as opposed to an older and cheaper machine?

If we look at the sales figures, we find that the best-selling Dolce Gusto coffee machines are still the Mini-Me (dating from 2013) in the automatic segment, and the Oblo (2014) or the very long-lasting Piccolo in the manual section.

And why? Mainly because the average Dolce Gusto consumer profile prefers cheap coffee machines. No more, no less. That’s why the new products of recent years, which are too expensive for the few innovations they incorporate, have not been as successful as these.

In 2017, the Lumio and Colors coffee machines were mainly betting on aesthetic changes and striking designs as the main asset to attract buyers. Will this be enough? Time will tell, but of course, it is already a good thing that they come out with an initial price below 40 Pounds or that they have opted for a very reduced design for both.

We recommend the Dolce Gusto Colors as a gift coffee maker for its attractive design or as an affordable option if you are going to buy your first coffee maker of this brand.

However, now is the time not to lose sight of machines like the Stelia, the Drop, the Eclipse or the Movenza that, with these new launches, can begin to drop in price when we least expect it.
