Buy a cheap coffee machine

Let’s start at the beginning, folks. Not everyone is willing to spend 100 or 200 pounds on a coffee maker to make a couple of quick coffees at home in the morning. There are many types of coffee users and consumers; some are the most demanding coffee drinkers and perfectionists. Others are the more conventional users who are merely looking for a coffee maker to make good coffee without complications and, if possible, without spending too much money.

The best coffee makers are offering incredible performance. Still, most of the time, they also need the user to have a specific experience and refinement in the preparation and tasting of coffee to get the most out of them and appreciate 100% everything they offer.

There is currently a multitude of options in the market for coffee machines under 100 pounds and even coffee machines under 50 pounds, which will more than satisfy all the needs that a medium profile home user may have.

So, in this buying guide, we have compiled all the criteria so that you know how to choose and buy a cheap coffee maker. In any case, remember that on our site, you can check out many other buying guides with numerous criteria to make the best decision and choose the coffee machine that suits your needs. The best-selling coffee machines, retro style coffee machines, or even pod coffee machines with a milk steamer.

Features of a cheap coffee machine

The first thing we must analyse when buying cheap coffee machines is the current state of the market, and in particular, what parameters influence whether a coffee machine is cheap. It is not enough to look at the price alone. The thing is not as simple as it seems, and in our opinion, these are the aspects that you should look at to value the price of a coffee machine and find cheap coffee machines.

Firstly, the performance of the coffee machine. As a common rule, brands and manufacturers of coffee machines divide their product line into three: low range, medium range and high range coffee machines. Logically, low and medium-range coffee machines are much cheaper than high range machines.

And that doesn’t mean that low-end machines are wrong products – far from it! It merely means that they have only the essential functions or capabilities to meet the demand of the average home user. They don’t include premium features and are not made of high-end materials (such as stainless steel coffee machines), and therefore are much more affordable. Good examples of this type of coffee maker are the Delonghi EC-145, the Dolce Gusto Mini-Me, or the Tassimo T20 (Tassimo Amia).

Secondly, we should also look at the age of the coffee maker. Manufacturers are continually renewing their product lines. It means that coffee machines that came onto the market 4 or 5 years ago are much cheaper than the latest model, even though their features are the same or very similar.

It is the case, for example, with the popular Dolce Gusto Piccolo, one of the pioneers of Dolce Gusto, which has a derisory price (usually around GBP 40) even though its functions are mostly the same as those of its range mates. In Nespresso’s range, there is the example of the Essenza, a coffee maker with a pedigree that, over the years, has seen its price gradually fall to the range of GBP 60-70.

Sometimes these are even machines that are no longer sold in physical stores or that the brands have already removed from their sales catalogues, but of which Amazon still keeps some copies in its gigantic central warehouses.

The price of the coffee machines also includes notably the seasonality. And more specifically, the Christmas season, which is the time of highest consumption in the coffee sector (and in any commercial sector, by extension).

For example, in the run-up to Christmas, many firms take the opportunity to launch their latest models and accompany them with juicy promotions or discounts, which are typically withdrawn when the month of January arrives. If you want to buy a cheap coffee maker of the latest model, you must be aware of these dates because many times, the opportunities only last a few weeks.

And finally, we must also look at the variations and offers from Amazon. As you know, Amazon, as a wholesale distributor, can offer prices on some coffee machines that are significantly lower than those found in official stores or even on the manufacturer’s website.

These offers are often for a short time or in a minimal stock (for example, five new coffee machines of a specific model and colour). Only the most experienced users can detect them and take advantage of them.

NOTE: when you check these offers on Amazon, always remember to check that they are new models of coffee machines and not reconditioned products or second-hand coffee machines. They are always checked and guaranteed by Amazon, but which have a lower price than usual and are not the subject of this post. If you are particularly interested in this group of machines, please consult our list of second-hand coffee machines.

Automatic and manual coffee machines

The mode of operation of the coffee machine also has a significant influence on its price. Manual coffee machines are always cheaper than automatic machines, and this applies to all segments: the same applies to capsule coffee machines as to espresso machines.

In capsule coffee machines, the distinction between manual and automatic operation is only made in Dolce Gusto coffee machines. You can read more about this in the following article: Differences between automatic and manual Dolce Gusto coffee machines.

On espresso machines, the distinction between manual and automatic occurs on all brands. Here you can find our lists of manual espresso machines and automatic espresso machines. However, there is a universal rule for both capsule and espresso machines: the cheapest machines are always the manual ones. Please check our list of the cheapest espresso machines.

Coffee machine offers 2022

And watch out for this too, folks: a coffee maker on sale is not always a cheap one, but we thought that including this information might also be of interest to readers who come across this article.

We’ll illustrate this with an example: if a £399 espresso machine is discounted to £250, we think it’s a brutal discount on the original price (£150 no less, 40% of the total) and so we think it’s interesting to mention it here, even though for £250 it’s never really going to be a cheap machine.

Buy cheap automatic coffee machine

In this section, we are going to be concise because we have already prepared a comprehensive guide on this subject: the cheapest automatic coffee machines.

To give you an idea, to buy a super cheap automatic coffee machine, you will have to have a minimum budget of between 250 and 300 pounds. Perhaps you can find some more affordable machines on the used coffee machine market or among the second-hand ones. But generally, the machines you find of this type are going to be more of the medium or high range of the sector.

Buy cheap espresso machine

Recently there has been a notable boost in the number – and quality – of cheap espresso machines. The average price has dropped quite a bit, to the point where it is possible to buy a cheap espresso machine (brand new) for 50-60 pounds. For this, you will have to go to manufacturers such as Swan, Cecotec or Silvercrest.

However, don’t expect too much in the way of materials or performance. If you want to buy a cheap espresso machine, you know what you’re going to take home.

Buy cheap drip coffee maker

And we conclude with the options available for buying a cheap filter coffee maker. It is a type of machine that we know very well, as it is usually the most widespread in the world. Here we don’t appreciate filter coffee as much as in Central Europe, and we find it challenging to invest larger budgets in drip coffee machines.

If we want to buy a cheap drip coffee maker, we can count on budgets of around 20-25 pounds. These are usually machines with plastic housing, with a glass jug, and no timer. In this case, the size will not be as much of a factor in price as it may be for other types of coffee machines.

In short: Which cheap coffee machine can I buy?

Well, at this point, we think you have all the information you need to find and buy a cheap coffee maker.

Be sure to visit the collections of cheap coffee makers that we have linked above. They include the cheapest models and also the best offers of coffee makers (which are not necessarily cheap coffee makers, but coffee makers that have a significant discount from their original price).
