Coffee knock box and drawer

A coffee knock drawer is nothing more than a knock box for throwing coffee grounds. Behind this curious name hides a coffee maker accessory very useful for traditional baristas. The coffee knock box for home use is a very useful accessory if you are a medium-high profile user and are used to grind your coffee before using it in the filter of your espresso machine.

Every time you make coffee, you have to empty the filter to remove the coffee grounds that have become wet and sticky when filtering. They usually remain in the form of a thick tablet, as they take the shape of the filter where they are pressed.

We advise you to buy the coffee knock box at Amazon, not only for the speed and convenience but above all because these items are somewhat difficult to find outside the specialized shops in coffee and barista. If you do not live in a big city, you may even have difficulty getting coffee knock boxes in physical shops.

In short, the knock box for throwing coffee grounds is a perfect accessory for those who have a semi-professional coffee machine at home.

Types of coffee knock box

We can distinguish a priori two big groups of coffee knock boxes for coffee grounds: the boat style and the drawer style. They serve the same purpose but have different capacities and approaches.

Bucket for coffee grounds

Coffee knock box bucket-style is not just a container. They should not be confused with coffee storage containers because they are just the opposite: Buckets for coffee grounds already brewed.

They have a horizontal bar that serves as a beater (you hit the filter there so that the grounds fall into the pot), and they usually have a lid whose function is mainly to preserve hygiene. The stainless steel and plastic ones – some more expensive, others more affordable – are the most common bucket for coffee grounds already brewed. They have less capacity and take up less space than the drawers we will see later on.

Also useful are the coffee knock bucket or drawers with carpet, which apart from not slipping, allow the dregs that always come out not to stain the worktop.

Drawers for coffee grounds

These are drawer-style basins or tanks integrated either into the worktop or the cabinet where our coffee maker is located, always next to the grinder to prevent the filter from “travelling too much”.

These drawers with coffee grounds beaters are usually made of stainless steel and have a larger capacity than the jars we have seen before and are more expensive, of course. There are independent ones (as if they were a jar on top of the worktop), but they are far from the usual standard. Knock boxes for throwing coffee grounds are more suitable for high-end espresso machines and users who are a little more serious about this hobby.

Coffee knock drawer for bars

Sometimes we may need to buy only the coffee knock drawer for the bar since, in the end, it is the element where the filter is always hit and the one most exposed to deterioration. Logically, this will depend on the number of services you do each day and the number of times you hit it.

This bar has to be resistant (not just any plastic stick) and of the right length to fit in your jar or drawer. Remember that the filter has to be hit with some force to make the wet dregs fall, so do not underestimate the durability of this element.

How do you use a coffee knock drawer?

A coffee grounds container is very simple, but it can be disastrous if we don’t do it right.

The first thing is to make sure that the pot is placed firmly (a mat helps a lot for this purpose) to prevent it from moving or slipping when we hit it.

Afterwards, you must be close to the coffee machine. Ideally, the coffee grounds should be emptied from the filter just after the coffee is taken out, and if you have the machine on one side and the coffee grounds container on the other (e.g. in front), you will most likely end up staining the kitchen floor.

Last but not least, we should try to give two dry strokes with the filter handle on the bar of our coffee knock drawer. If we have to knock many times to get out all the dregs, something is wrong.
